Japan vs US Pokémon Card Prices — Why the Gap Exists

Japanese Pokémon cards are printed and sold domestically in Japan, then separately imported, graded, and resold in the US secondary market. Each of those steps can move the price up or down relative to the Japan-domestic price — sometimes significantly.

Why Japan can be cheaper

• Local supply is higher — Japan is the primary print market.
• Japanese marketplaces (Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions) have lower fees than graded US resale.
• US grading services (PSA, BGS) add a premium once a card is graded and imported.

Why Japan can be more expensive

• Extremely popular chase cards (like special art rares) can be bid up domestically by Japanese collectors faster than international demand catches on.
• Limited print runs on some sets create scarcity before wide export.

How to read the gap on Sokumise

Each card page shows a Japan Reference Price (median of recent Japanese marketplace listings) next to a US Market Reference (when we have overseas snapshot data — we never invent a number). The percentage gap between them is informational, not a guarantee that either price is achievable at this exact moment.

What the gap does not tell you

• It is not investment advice, and card values can fall as well as rise.
• Condition matters — a raw Japanese card is not directly comparable to a PSA 10 US listing.
